Mustang milestone: 10 millionth ‘Stang gallops off assembly line

-

After 54 years of continuous production, the 10 millionth Ford Mustang has galloped off the assembly line.

To mark the occasion, Ford invited 60 Mustang owners representing each generation of the ponycar to celebrate the 10 millionth car at its Flat Rock, Michigan, assembly plant. The owners spelled out the milestone production number with their cars and the automaker has arranged for a flyover salute by a P-51 Mustang fighter plane.

Ford said it also planned for other celebrations at its Dearborn, Michigan, headquarters with employees.

The 10 millionth Mustang is a GT convertible model finished in Wimbledon White to honor the first serialized 1964 1/2 Mustang. Like the first Mustang, the 2019 Mustang GT boasts a V8 engine and manual transmission, though the 2019 model adds three cogs to the 1964 1/2’s 3-speed manual transmission.

Although the celebrations will largely take place at the Flat Rock plant, the Mustang called Dearborn home for the vast majority of its life. Production at the Ford plant in the automaker’s hometown ended in 2004 after 40 years. The pony car has also called plants in San Jose, California, and Metuchen, New Jersey, home over the years.

Even after 10 million cars built, the Mustang is still America’s best-selling sports car, according to Ford’s analysis of vehicle registrations. That’s despite rivals and emulators such as the Chevrolet Camaro and Dodge Challenger vying for a piece of the Mustang’s market.

And although Mustang is largely weighed as a pony car, the nameplate has transformed into a modern-day sports car with track-focused and high-horsepower spun from the Blue Oval in recent years. Yes, we’re looking directly at the Shelby GT350 and the forthcoming GT500.

  1. When the Mustang came out I had just started working part-time at the then oldest Ford dealer and hadn’t been told anything about the new car line. I wondered if the dealership owner even new about the Mustang when he hiered me the previous Fall. Of the 4 salesmen there I was able to sell the first Mustang we had as the purchaser was willing to leave it on the floor for a week until the next one arrived, which I also sold. During the next 3 years until I went to work for the FAA I managed to qualify for the Ford 500 club as a part-timer selling mostly Mustangs. I’m grateful to the late George Palmer for that opportunity he afforded me. A great time of my life. Of the more than 70 cars we’ve owned 2 of our present ones are Fords.
