The Fairplex in Pomona isn’t quite Hollywood, but cars with movie-star allure headline the docket for Mecum Auctions’ Los Angeles 2018 sale, scheduled for February 16-17 just off the I-10 some 30 miles east of downtown LA.
The star cars for the auction include a 2018 Bugatti Chiron and a 2015 McLaren 650S Spider. For bidders with more traditional tastes, also crossing the block will be 10 vehicles from the Donald O. Preston Collection of 1950s, ‘60s and ‘70s Detroit iron.
Mecum reports a 600-car docket for the auction.
The Chiron, in blue and black, is one of only 70 produced for the 2018 model year and one of only 500 scheduled for the model’s seven-year production life. Propulsion, to a top speed of 261 mph, comes from a quad-turbocharged, 8.0-liter, 1,479-horsepower W16 engine. The super sports car is all-wheel driven through a 7-speed twin-clutch transmission.
The car has five selectable “drive protocols” — Lift, EB, Autobahn, Handling and Top Speed.
The Beluga Black Comfort seats were a $31,000 option.
The McLaren, another contemporary supercar, is equipped with a $6,490 sport exhaust system and is pushed around by a twin-turbo, 3.8-liter V8. For shopping on Rodeo Drive, the car has an Iris upgraded satellite navigation system and, once you arrive on the famed boulevard, front and rear parking sensors lest you scratch the carbon fiber bodywork.
The Preston Collection includes a 1916 Buick touring convertible and 1972 Jaguar XJ6 sedan, but it also features the likes of a 1957 Chevrolet Bel Air station wagon, 1956 Oldsmobile 88, 1954 Bel Air convertible, a customized 1979 Chevrolet C-10 stepside pickup, and an unrestored and nicely patinaed, V8-powered 1958 Chevy Delray sedan on Cragar wheels.
Also on the Mecum docket are a Hemi-powered 1958 Facel Vega FV4 Typhoon, one of only 36 produced; a 1962 Chevrolet Impala Super Sport with a 409 V8; a 1970 Oldsmobile 442 W-30; and a 23-window 1963 Volkswagen bus with air suspension.
