Mini-Copperstate rally added to Arizona Auction Week activities

-

The 28th annual Copperstate 1000 vintage sports car rally doesn’t take place until April 7-11, 2018, but the event’s organizer, the Men’s Arts Council of the Phoenix Art Museum, is linking with Hagerty to stage a 2-day mini rally as part of Arizona Auction Week.

The rally takes place January 15-16 (Monday and Tuesday of auction week) and is open to cars produced through the 1989 model year. The route goes from the Phoenix area to an overnight stay at the Starr Pass Marriott in Tucson, then returns for a reception and auction preview at the Bonhams venue in Scottsdale.

Frank Mandarano is best known within the collector car hobby as founder of Concorso Italiano, the annual celebration of Italian vehicles staged each August as part of Monterey Car Week in northern California.

But when his Maserati 3500 GTI broke on his second day of ownership back in 1976, he and his future wife sought help and eventually founded the Maserati Club International, which grew to more than 3,500 members in 39 nations.

In 1998, the Mandaranos founded the Car Guy Tour, which in 2018 celebrates its 25th annual Italian tour with visits to Como, Milano, Torino, Modena and Maranello. The tour spans September 1-12, including the Italian Grand Prix race at Monza, and visits to Maserati, Pagani, Lamborghini and Ferrari; to the Pininfarina, Zagato, Italdesign and Fioravanti design studios; to Borrani wheels, restoration shops and more.
