‘The Soul of the West’ is the theme for the 13th annual Going to the Sun vintage rally, scheduled for September 4-9, 2017. The route will “travel the West of legend and lore, of heroes and villains,” the organizers promise as they announce the opening of registration for the event.
“This is terrain and climate at their most extreme,” they note, “elemental territory where wolves howl, elk bugle, and exhaust notes are lost in the silence of the pines.”
The event starts and ends in Bozeman, Montana, and will travel 1,200 miles “without a straight yellow line” to such iconic western towns as Cooke City, Red Lodge, Cody, Jackson and Moose, with two nights in the shadow of the Grand Tetons.
Registration is open through January 31, 2017 at the rally website, but is limited to 50 cars, which must have been built no more recently than 1973.
To date, the event has raised more than $500,000 for communities and organizations in Montana, including the Friends of the Association of Montana Troopers, which supports the families of Montana Highway Patrol personnel who have died in the line of duty.
