Mecum Auctions sold 435 collector cars in three days during its annual Chicagoland sale in Schaumburg, Illinois, with total sales reaching $10.5 million (not including auction buyer fees).
The auction presented a diverse selection of vehicles, and the list of 10 highest sellers reflects some of that wide range, although dominated by American classics from the ’50s and ’60s. A 1970 Ford Mustang Boss 429 fastback in Grabber Blue topped the auction at $245,000 (plus buyer fee).
A 1967 Chevy Corvette was second-highest sellerThe overall auction total was down from year-ago sales, which hit more than $13 million with 494 cars sold. The 2014 Chicago sale achieved $15.5 million and 580 cars sold. The sell through rate for the 2016 auction was improved from the past two years, however, at better than 70 percent.
A special feature this year was Blackhawks Day on Friday, with discounts for fans of the Chicago Blackhawks hockey team, special appearances and interactive games. During Friday’s sale, the team’s namesake charity offered an exclusive Chicago Blackhawks Experience package with an extensive list of VIP items and event passes, which was bid to $10,000.
