When is a classic Ford Mustang not a Mustang? When it is a Mercury Cougar.

The Mercury Cougar was a more luxurious version of the Mustang and offered a nicer interior, slightly different styling and, many say, better fit and finish. The Cougar cost more money when new than the Mustang was and never had the success of the Mustang in the marketplace. This continues to hold true as the Cougar is still priced much lower than the Mustang in the classic car market.

The Pick of the Day is this 1968 Mercury Cougar coupe for sale in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for the bargain price of only $19,950. This Cougar is powered by the correct 302 cid V8 engine and features an automatic transmission, power steering, power front disk brakes and factory A/C.

The seller, a classic car dealer, describes the car in the ClassicCars.com listing as originally delivered in Arizona. It has an immaculate Wimbleton White paint job, correct Tuxedo Black interior and is ready to drive anywhere, the seller says.

I actually prefer the look of the Cougar when compared with the Mustang and find that such features as the hidden headlights and taillight treatment make it look more European. Those taillights include sequential-flashing turn signals. The interior of the Cougar is also a step above the Mustang, and this car features a nice three-spoke wood steering wheel and a nice console-mounted shifter.

These cars are just starting to attract more attention and are finally becoming more sought after, but the prices for the Cougar have not gone crazy yet. This looks like a great classic car buy to show and enjoy with a minimum of fuss or trouble.

“It rolls down the road with ease and will give its new owner many miles of driving pleasure,” the seller adds.

  3. I bought a 1967 Cougar XR7 in 1972 for $900 cash in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. My stepfather, Darrell Dake, who was a stock car driver in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s, brought it home for me to see. It had a 390 engine….I didn’t care about that, I just loved the look of the car!
