With a day to go and two auctions to complete, the classic car sales on the Monterey Peninsula already have exceeded 2013 figures. A year ago, total sales for all auctions were $302 million. Through Saturday evening this year, total sales are $352.4 million, according to figures compiled by Hagerty Insurance, which monitors each auction venue and provides a daily report to the news media.

Already, five vehicles have sold for eight-figure bids, led by the 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO that brought $38.1 million Thursday night at Bonhams. That quintet certainly will increase: Gooding & Company has another full day of its auction to conduct Sunday and Rick Cole Auctions is to report the results of its inaugural bidding-by-smart-phone sale at midnight.

The docket at Gooding includes the 1966 Ferrari 365 P Berlinetta Speciale “Tre Posti” and the Rick Cole website reports that bidding on a 1955 Ferrari 410 Sport already has reached $19 million — and also notes that figure falls short of the reserve price.

Saturday, a 1964 Ferrari 275 GTB/C Speciale went for $26.4 million at RM, a 1961 Ferrari 250 GT LWB California Spyder brought $15.18 million at Gooding, and a 1967 Ferrari 275 GTB/4 coupe sold for $10.175 million at RM.

You might want to read that last paragraph again. Consider that the $26.4-million sale at RM might normally make headlines around the world, but is in only the fourth paragraph of this story. That’s how amazing the cars and the bidding have been this weekend on the Monterey Peninsula.

Also Saturday, Mecum Auctions joined the Monterey Million Dollar Club with seven vehicles selling for seven-figure numbers. Russo and Steele posted its second million-dollar sale of the weekend on Saturday.

Bonhams completed its Monterey auction Friday with total sales of $106.2 million, compared to $31.1 million in 2013. The major reason for the boost, of course, was the presence on the docket this year for 10 Ferraris from a museum in Italy.

RM, Mecum, and Russo and Steele wrapped up their 2014 Monterey sales Saturday.

RM’s total sales were $142.8 million, compared to $125.0 million a year ago.

Mecum posted $33.5 million in sales this year, a slight decline from $34.9 million last year. One reason may be a 49-percent sell-through this year compared to a 63-percent figure a year ago. On the other hand, both average sales price and median sales prices were up this year for Mecum’s Monterey auction.

Russo and Steele did $9.6 million in sales this year on the peninsula, compared to $7.1 million last year, and enjoyed significant increases in both average and media prices.
